Choose Life
October 27, 2010 – 4:13 amFor many years, ice cream seemed to be a stronghold in my life. Unashamedly, I could easily empty a ½ gallon of my favorite flavor in one or two days. I never saw overeating as a vice. In fact, I would justify my consumption by feeling proud or even somewhat superior because I did not smoke or drink. I concluded that my penchant for savory satisfaction was not hurting anyone.
Denial and justification can be two of the most misapplied defense mechanisms.
Making right food choices had been a lifetime issue for me. My desire for tasty desserts was so strong that my judgment was affected – it clouded my ability to think and reason soundly.
As I came to understand that God wants and has His best for me in every area of my life…including my health and fitness, I had to face another truth. In order for the promises of God to come to fruition in my life, I must be an active participant. I accepted the reality that I am responsible for making choices that are consistent and conducive for His Will to manifest.
Moses and Joshua continually admonished God’s people on the importance of making right choices.
“I call Heaven and Earth to witness against you today: I place before you Life and Death, Blessing and Curse. Choose life so that you and your children will live. And love GOD, your God, listening obediently to Him, firmly embracing Him. Oh yes, He is life itself, a long life settled on the soil that GOD, your God, promised to give your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (The Message)
“And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15 (NKJV)
God’s invitation to acknowledge His counsel and direction in all of our ways should also include our dietary decisions.
As a success empowerment strategist, one of my key avocations is to help others to become more conscious of the potential problems that can result from unhealthy life choices. In order to realize improved fitness in my own life, my thinking had to change.
Brothers and sisters, because of God’s compassion toward us, I encourage you to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, dedicated to God and pleasing to Him. This kind of worship is appropriate for you. 2Don’t become like the people of this world. Instead, change the way you think. Then you will always be able to determine what God really wants—what is good, pleasing, and perfect. Romans 12:1-2 (GOD’S WORD Translation)
We are filled with a great power called freewill. And it is up to us to make the sound choices that will produce the exceeding, abundant, above-all-that-we-imagine life that God promises.
Having the prerogative to choose to do or not to do something is so empowering. A forced choice seems oxymoronic. By taking the initiative to live the life we choose and love, we are empowered to generate greater abundance in our lives.
An important action point in my weight loss success is that I took the initiative to choose more responsible eating before an emergency consequence demanded a choice. As a result of choosing ~ my health, energy, strength, endurance, outlook on life and appearance has greatly improved.
We are the Lord’s inheritance – His greatest treasure in the earth. He has given us stewardship over all of our resources. The value of our health, strength and overall well-being is paramount.
A wonder-filled future is in store for you. You are free to make your best choices. Be empowered. Choose life!
