Genetically Modified Plants To Resist Intense Drought

Israeli agro-biotechnology company, Rosetta Green, has developed a new technology to develop plants that are better able to withstand prolonged periods of severe drought. The company aims to develop new plant varieties resistant to harsh climatic condition, maintaining an increased yield.

The company, based in Rehovot, Israel, experimented on tobacco plants that were irrigated with seawater instead of freshwater.

Rates of sexually transmitted diseases in St. Louis still high

The number of new cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis in the St. Louis area increased in 2010, according to an annual report released today by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The city of St. Louis ranks second for chlamydia, third for gonorrhea and 20th for syphilis rates when compared to U.S. counties and independent cities, according to the city health department’s analysis of the data.

Close to 4,600 new chlamydia cases were diagnosed in the city last year.

Susan Hughes Named UIC Researcher of the Year

The University of Illinois at Chicago has named Susan L. Hughes the 2012 Researcher of the Year Award for Social Sciences and the Humanities. She is the second scientist from the Institute for Health Research and Policy to receive this award.

Hughes is professor of community health sciences in the School of Public Health and codirector of IHRP’s Center for Research on Health and Aging. Her research focuses on the health of older adults, including long-term care policy, cost, and quality; the effectiveness of community-based services for older adults; the prevention of disability; and the adoption of and adherence to wellness behaviors in this population.
