No. 13 John Isner defeats Gilles Muller in Memphis

Isner, ranked a career-best No. 13 in the world, overpowered Muller with 26 aces, including five in the two tiebreakers. Isner also won 96 percent of his first-serve points. The 26-year-old advances to the second round where he’ll oppose American Donald Young.

“Even though I beat Roger (Federer), it was just one match,” Isner said. “Confidence comes from putting a string of match (wins) together. I haven’t really played that many matches. This was just my seventh match of the year.”

Isner’s doubles partner, Sam Querrey also advanced to the second round with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against Alejandro Falla of Colombia.

New program mails free condoms to Sacramento teens

No more of those awkward moments, placing a box of condoms on the checkout stand, staring at the ground and hoping the cashier doesn’t look too closely at what you’re buying.

And therefore, public health officials hope, no more unprotected sex among teens or at least less of it.

Sacramento County teens can now order free condoms by mail, through a California Department of Public Health program that aims to cut soaring rates of sexually transmitted diseases among the young.

Statewide, the highest rates of chlamydia and gonorrhea are among people age 15 to 24, especially young women.

Lack of snow forces switch to sneakers at Highland Forest Snowshoe Race

Fabius, NY — It would be like hockey without ice or swimming without water.

But a paucity of snow didnt stop 16 snowshoers from competing Sunday in the third annual 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer races at Highland Forest Park in Fabius.

Not enough snow? They just went without the snowshoes.

Eric Hulbert, 16, of Mexico, won the 5k race in a time of 22:56 about two minutes faster than he normally runs the same distance in snowshoes.

It stinks since its supposed to be snowshoeing, Hulbert said at the finish line.

With no snow on the ground at all on Saturday, race organizers had to make the call that night to hold the race in running shoes instead of snowshoes.
