Bring the Heat! A Desert Theme for Preschoolers

Bring a little bit of the American Southwest to your preschool classroom with these desert themed activities. Prickly pear cactus, coyotes and tumbleweeds abound when you create a preschool desert theme that will introduce children to the landscape and culture of the Sonoran desert.

These art activities will help children understand some of the features of a desert landscape.

Cactus Sculpture: Provide children with green Play-Doh and several photos of cacti in a desert landscape. Fill a short clear plastic cup with rocks and sand and have children place their Play-Doh sculptures in the mini desert landscape.

Expecting

I looked in the mirror yesterday and caught a sideways view of my belly.

Can I really get any bigger?

I have ten weeks left in this pregnancy, my second and last. I wish I didn’t know it was my last—that this is the last time I will feel the first flutters in my stomach, and then subtle kicks and then, at this stage, rolls that contort my tummy into the strangest shapes.

This being my second, I don’t have time to just sit and revel in the miracle growing inside my body. My three-year-old is a handful, to say the least. She’s wonderful, of course, but stubborn and challenging. I’m sur

My pediatrician says he’ll outgrow it.

Of course he will. He’s an average kid from a good-enough family so he will not be wearing diapers to high school, sucking on his pacifier at his college graduation ceremony, or throwing tantrums in the grocery checkout line when he goes shopping with his wife.
