Susan Hughes Named UIC Researcher of the Year

The University of Illinois at Chicago has named Susan L. Hughes the 2012 Researcher of the Year Award for Social Sciences and the Humanities. She is the second scientist from the Institute for Health Research and Policy to receive this award.

Hughes is professor of community health sciences in the School of Public Health and codirector of IHRP’s Center for Research on Health and Aging. Her research focuses on the health of older adults, including long-term care policy, cost, and quality; the effectiveness of community-based services for older adults; the prevention of disability; and the adoption of and adherence to wellness behaviors in this population.

‘Angry Brides’ game targets sexist Indian dowry demands

Dowries — such as jewellery, clothes, cars and money — are traditionally given by the bride’s family to the groom and his parents to ensure she is taken care of in her new home.

The custom was outlawed more than five decades ago. But it is still widely practiced, with the groom’s family demanding even more money after marriage, leading to mental and physical harassment that can drive the woman to suicide.

In the worst cases, she may be murdered by her husband and his family, often in so-called “stove burnings” where she is doused in kerosene and set on fire.

Hundreds enjoy perfect weather for Syracuse Resolution Run

Syracuse, NY — It was a good morning for resolutions. Hundreds of runners participated Sunday morning in the Syracuse Track Club’s annual Resolution Run. The sun shone, the roads were clear and the temperature hovered around a pleasant 50 degrees.

The 4- to 6-mile run, which is in its 33rd year, started and ended at Spaghetti Warehouse on North Clinton Street and wound its way around Syracuse’s North Side. About halfway through the run, at Washington Square park off LeMoyne Avenue, runners enjoyed a champagne and water stop.

Cannabis water pipes (bongs) ban now in force

The sale, display and supply of bongs in Victoria is now illegal under new laws introduced on 1 January 2012.

Mental Health Minister Mary Wooldridge said the move sent an important message that cannabis was an illegal drug, which when consumed could have harmful consequences.

“Through making the display and sale of bongs illegal, we take them out of the markets, off the shelves, and out of shop windows and stop them being seen as a normal retail item,” Ms Wooldridge said.

Banning the sale of bongs better aligns Victorian legislation regarding illicit drugs, with the possession and consumption of cannabis already prohibited.
