St. Joe’s Hospital sponsors heart healthy makeover for women

Makeovers usually help those on the receiving end look better, but St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health Center is inviting Central New York women to participate in a free makeover that can do much more.

As part of the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign, St. Joe’s is sponsoring the 2012 BetterU Challenge, a 12-week heart healthy makeover designed to “transform overall health through small, simple choices.”

While anyone can visit heart.org/goredsyracuse and take the challenge, the hospital is soliciting applications from women who want to participate in the makeover in a very public way.

The 10 local women selected will have access to a gym and a personal trainer.

Q&A: Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones on health care reform

Since he took office early last year, state Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones has made health care reform his top priority. Now he’s backing a ballot measure the Insurance Rate Public Justification and Accountability Act that would give him the power to block health insurance rate increases he deems excessive.

He spoke to The Bee recently about the initiative and President Barack Obama’s health care reform act under review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

2-decade US forecast shows no end in sight for obesity epidemic

Today, just over a third of U.S. adults are obese. By 2030, 42 percent will be, says a forecast released Monday.

That’s not nearly as many as experts had predicted before the once-rapid rises in obesity rates began leveling off. But the new forecast suggests even small continuing increases will add up.

“We still have a very serious problem,” said obesity specialist Dr. William Dietz of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Worse, the already obese are getting fatter. Severe obesity will double by 2030, when 11 percent of adults will be nearly 100 pounds (45 kilograms) overweight, or more, concluded the research led by Duke University.

Healthy Gums and Diabetes: Study Seems to Show a Beneficial Connection

Healthcare providers and most people with diabetes are aware that there is a connection between gum health and complications from diabetes. Unhealthy gums are thought to be both a result of the disease and a gateway to infections and complications to which diabetes opens the door.

Now a study from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia has come up with figures that seem to confirm the connection between healthy gums and fewer diabetic complications.

Nothing like a good barbecue! Less to clean up, easy to cook, and tasty. Rhode Island Hospital physicians have identified six cases of accidental ingestion of wire grill brush bristles that required endoscopic or surgical removal. The paper calls attention to the need for the public and physicians to be aware of this potential danger. It is published in the American Journal of Roentgenology and is now available online in advance of print.

Tobacco firms must report ingredients: US

The preliminary guidance issued Friday by the Food and Drug Administration marks the first time tobacco makers will be required to report quantities of 20 chemicals associated with cancer, lung disease and other health problems. The FDA will require companies to display the information in a consumer-friendly format by next April.

Ingredients or byproducts subject to the new rule include ammonia, carbon monoxide and formaldehyde.

Regulators have identified more than 93 harmful or potentially harmful chemicals in tobacco products, though the agency is only focus on 20 for the coming year. The agency will take comments on the guidance until June 4, before finalizing them.

A motorcycle accident left David Leach without a lower leg and without much hope.

“The first two years I was like moping and crying,” says Leach, 42, from Utica, describing the 2005 accident’s aftermath. But Leach didn’t let a below-the-knee amputation extinguish his competitive spirit.

With diligent rehabilitation and specialized prosthetics, Leach found his stride. He took up adaptive biathlon and cross-country skiing. At the Empire State Games in February in Lake Placid, the he won gold in the adaptive biathlon–a grueling endurance event combining cross-country skiing and precision shooting–and bronze in the adaptive cross-country ski sprint.

Virginia man injured in gun accident gets new face

Richard Lee Norris of Hillsville is recovering well after last week’s surgery, beginning to feel his face and already brushing his teeth and shaving, University of Maryland Medical Center officials announced Tuesday. He’s also regained his sense of smell, which he had lost after the accident.

Norris, who was selected from among five possible candidates for the surgery, has been living as a recluse, doing his shopping at night. It’s hoped the transplant will give him his life back, said Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, the lead surgeon.

“It’s a surreal experience to look at him. It’s hard not to stare. Before, people used to stare at Richard because he wore a mask and they wanted to see the deformity,” Rodriguez said. “No

Ronda Giangreco woke up following a day of wine tasting in 2008 and knew something was terribly wrong. Her entire left side had gone numb, and doctors diagnosed her as having had a stroke.

The next day, her right side was numb as well. After a spinal tap and a number of other tests, her condition was confirmed: late-onset multiple sclerosis.

It’s one of the most frightening afflictions a person can face. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, about 400,000 Americans have MS, a chronic disease that can have devastating effects on the central nervous system.

The diagnosis sent Giangreco through a number of drug regimens and the prospect of never walking again.
